These tiny berries are super packed with vitamins and minerals. Blueberries get their vibrant color from anthocyanins (members of the flavonoid family) which not only produce that gorgeous pigment, but also act as antioxidants and provide many health benefits.
Antioxidants help combat free radicals (which can lead to aging and cancer) are anti-inflammatory, & promote healthy skin.Blueberries also contain vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, phosphorus, calcium and manganese- all which contribute to healthy bones. The fiber in blueberries helps prevent constipation and promote regularity for a healthy digestive tract. These little guys also have vitamin A, zinc, copper, folate, B6, & vitamin E. Additionally, blueberries help fight urinary tract infections, may protect brain health & prevent memory loss, and have a role in decreasing the risk of heart disease.
1 cup contains only 84 calories so go get yourself some blueberries. Pop some in your pancakes this weekend, throw some on your cereal or morning oatmeal, mix some in with yogurt & granola for a healthy snack, or blend them into a smoothie. Below is the recipe for one of my favorite smoothies
